What You'll Learn:

Depending on your interests and project goals, you'll build upon your existing wheel throwing skills by exploring a selection of advanced techniques, including:
  • Throw larger and more technically demanding vessels with confidence.
  • Develop consistency across larger forms and cohesive series of work.
  • Combine, alter, and assemble multiple thrown components into complex functional and sculptural forms.
  • Design and construct functional attachments including spouts, handles, knobs, and galleries.
  • Master advanced forms including bottle forms, moon jars, narrow-necked vessels, and closed forms.
  • Throw wide forms such as platters and chargers while minimizing warping and distortion.
  • Integrate advanced surface techniques including faceting, carving, mishima, sgraffito, slip decoration, wax resist, and layered glazing.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of glaze chemistry, glaze layering, and how surface choices support finished work.
  • Students will gain hands-on experience loading two glaze kilns during the session, developing an understanding of proper kiln loading and glaze firing practices.

What You'll Make:

Projects are selected based on your experience, interests, and goals. Students will typically complete a selection of advanced forms such as:
  • Large statement vases
  • Pitchers and complex pouring vessels
  • Teapots with custom-fitted lids, spouts, and handles
  • Large lidded jars and covered serving pieces
  • Platters, chargers, and serving ware
  • Coordinated serving sets and nested forms
  • Tall bottles and narrow-necked vessels
  • Altered and sculptural ceramic forms
  • Independent project developed around your personal interests
